Having a vehicle is an important part of life; unfortunately, many families find themselves without a car when facing financial difficulties. Without transportation, it can be difficult or even impossible to keep a job or continue with school, leaving those without a car unable to improve their situation. Fortunately, there are several ways for low-income families to get a car for free. On average, low-income households spend a disproportionately high percentage of their annual income on auto insurance. If we consider auto insurance to be required in most states, then it is a necessary expense.

Government-sponsor auto insurance for low-income families, the government also sponsors a free car for low-income families.

How can I get government-sponsored free cars

Contact a local church or religious organization. Tell them about your financial situation, and find out if they have or know of a donated vehicle that you could obtain. Large churches are more likely to have donation programs.

Locate a Goodwill nearby and contact them to find out if they have free cars available. Often people donate their vehicles to Goodwill for tax purposes; those vehicles are delivered to low-income families.

Contact local organizations that request car donations to find out how to receive a vehicle donated by them. You can find contact information for these types of organizations online.

Participate in online drawings to win a car. Winning a car is unlikely, but someone has to win, so you might as well put yourself in the race. Find reputable giveaways online where you can enter and have a chance to win a car. Even if you don’t win, it’s worth a try.

Look for a job that offers a company vehicle to workers. Some companies offer their employees a car to drive, while that vehicle may come with certain stipulations about how it can be used or how much you can drive, they will provide transportation to work until you have the funds to buy something else.

Getting a donated car can take a long process. Usually, each organization has different application instructions, be prepared to provide plenty of paperwork and information about your financial and personal situation.

Prepare to take any available vehicle. Do not expect to receive a perfect car or a new model; instead, be happy with any means of transportation you can get. You can always buy a new vehicle when your situation improves. Don’t communicate with shady or unheard-of organizations. Do not give any money to the organization, bank information, or credit card, especially through the Internet. Check with the Better Business Bureau to find out if an organization is legitimate.

How can I get a Donated car or a gifted car?

Getting a donated or gifted car can be very difficult unless you know the correct steps to take. You may have seen advertisements where people donate their cars, but where do the cars go after they have been donated? How do you get one for yourself?

Determine if you are eligible to get a donated or gifted car. Those normally eligible are families in homeless shelters, military families, families in transition from public assistance, victims of natural disasters, non-profit organizations, and those with medical needs.

Apply for a donated or gifted car. It starts with 1-800-Charity, cars for your help, and Online Car Donation. The links are in the resource box. Submit your request as directed. You will need to give your full name, your email address, your state of residence, and eligibility information.

Contact your Department of Health and Human Services, Goodwill, and Salvation Army using the following resources. They will have specific information for your location and eligibility for a donated or gifted car. Ask for an application and fill it out completely. When you receive a donated car, tell the other charities that have already responded to you, so that other candidates can move up the list.

Be creative and ask for help. Talk to the church you belong to and ask if they can organize a donation or give away a car. Other church members can help by donating a car to the church where they can receive a tax break.
