Free Video Editing Software
Windows Movie Maker
Windows Movie Maker can make editing your home movies remarkably easy. You can drag and drop the different clips into the program window, they will be put into order automatically and you can then add video transitions and other special effects, in-between and on each clip. Other options you can add to the video clips with Windows Movie Maker are soundtracks, and text effects such as captions and credits. Once you have completed the video, you can save it as a video file and upload it straight from the application to YouTube, Facebook and other websites and networks. A really simple app for making good movies.
Avidemux is an open source video editing software which assists you in joining video clips together, cutting them and also apply a range of different filters to the clips. Avidemux also provides an online wiki which can help you learn how the system works and how to adjust videos using the different options and fine controls. Well worth a look.
VSDC Free Video Editor
VSDC Free Video Editor includes a number of useful tools for editing your videos. These tools include drawing and selection tools, colour and lighting adjustment tools, filters and transition effects and audio tools. Once you have finished your video project you have the option to save it, optimise it for putting online or viewing on mobile devices or burn it to DVD. One downside to the program is that it does take a bit of time to learn and understand, and there is a lack of educational documentation for the software.
Lightworks offers the most editing power for a free video editing package with the ability to support multiple cameras, add live effects and is equipped with loads of effects and trimming tools. Despite being free the tool ha been used in production of Hollywood movies including Batman. Lightworks is not the most easy tool to use however, and it will take you time to read the support documentation and experiment before you get the hang of it. Definitely not the best video editing tool for beginners.
Free Video Dub
Free Video Dub allows video trimming from the movie timeline without re-encoding the movie and maintaining the quality of the video. While it does not offer a great deal of function over the top of this, it is a great free tool fro trimming video clips especially when they are longer.
