The popular RSS service Google Reader is due to be shut down as of July 2013. There are a number of free Google Reader alternatives available online for obtaining your RSS feeds from different websites and blogs. These alternatives range from traditional RSS reader styles to more innovative designs for your personal news reader. We list the best of them below.
Flipboard is a popular app for iOS and Android devices that can be used to pull content from RSS feeds and displayed in an aesthetically pleasing format. Additionally users can display their social media feeds from Facebook and Twitter as well as other popular feeds from user-selected categories. All the information is accumulated to create a personalised magazine which is great to read on a handheld device. An awesome package it is a shame that there is no desktop or web version of the reader.
RSS Reader NewsBlur is available as an iOS or Android app or on web browsers, enabling you to view RSS feeds from your desktop PC. Boasting a simple layout it allows users to subscribe to up to 64 feeds for free and has a simple layout and innovative features such as the ability to remember the type of stories that you like and to highlight them to bring them to your attention.
The Old Reader
The Old Reader is one of the original Google Reader clones and offers a majority of the same features as its clone. While it is simple to transfer data from Google Reader into the Old Reader, the service can only be used on a desktop PC or through a web browser. There is no mobile app available for iOS, Android or any other mobile platform, a drawback that might discourage many people from using the Old Reader.
