Safe Downloading Online

1. Use a good browser. Most of the top browsers will warn you if you are going onto a site that is possibly affected by malware. If you receive this warning do not go onto the site and certainly do not download anything from it. For a list of the top browsers available check out our article choosing your web browser.

2. Avoid any site that tries to give you an automatic download. If the site is not a trusted source or vendor and it starts an automatic download then cancel it immediately and close your browser. If the download has already completed then scan it for viruses or to err on the side of safety, delete it immediately. Infected sites often try to attempt automatic downloads to transfer malware so keep your eye on your downloads action when you visit a new site.

3. Make a majority of your downloads from trusted sources. We mostly know what trusted sources are on the Internet but be wary of sources that you have never heard of and cannot find reviews for. Examples of trusted sources are Adobe and Google and the free sites listed on Jabbersite in our various articles and posts. Before you download any new software read reviews on what it actually does and if it is legitimate. This will tell you what you want to know about the software including if it is actually worth downloading or not.

4. If at all possible download the software from the official site rather than download sites. While many downlaod sites are completely legitimate, there are a few which offer the software but infected with malware by cyber criminals. If you cannot download from an official site then stick to sources that are trusted and check credentials of any site that you want to download from.

5. Check any potential downlaods with you computer antivirus software. A good antivirus software is one of the most important and basic applications that you should have installed on your computer. Once you have completed the download of any software, then scan it with you antivirus software by rick-clicking on the file and clicking on the “scan” option. This will ensure that the file is safe to be installed.

6. Examine the file name and size of the download compared to the one listed on the website. If there are any differences this could indicated a false or infected file.

There are more precautions you can take against downloading unsafe files from the Internet, but those shown above a good first step to preventing malware being installed on your computer. Use your common sense when browsing and downloading and avoid taking risks.
